Phnom Penh, Cambodia – On June 3, 2025, the Research Office at Paragon International University hosted the Kolab Award Ceremony 2025 in the conference hall of ParagonU campus, marking a significant milestone in Cambodia’s commitment to fostering research and innovation. The event celebrated outstanding researchers whose work contributes to the nation’s impact and scholarly excellence in Engineering and Architecture, Information and Communication Technology, Economics and Administrative Sciences, Mathematics and Sciences, Arts, Humanities, and Languages, as well as Higher Education.

Dr. Bulat G. Akhmetkarimov, Rector of Paragon International University, delivering the opening remarks, emphasized the collective effort in advancing Cambodia’s research landscape. “This award is a testament to our researchers’ dedication. We are all on the same boat, striving to develop Cambodia. Your choice to be here and contribute matters most,” he stated. He acknowledged the challenges of working in a developing country but expressed optimism, noting that the Kolab Award signifies a strong commitment to supporting innovation.

Prof. Dr. Meirambek Zhaparov, Vice Rector for Research of Paragon International University, in his introduction, explained the significance of the award’s name. “Why Kolab? The flower, though delicate, can grow even in the harshest conditions, symbolizing hidden strength and silent perseverance,” he noted. He highlighted that while the Romdoul is Cambodia’s national flower, the Kolab (rose) carries a profound meaning of resilience, uniqueness and beauty. He encouraged researchers to embrace challenges as opportunities for growth.

A panel discussion featuring Kolab Award winners and Provost Dr. Bradley J. Murg provided insights into enhancing research impact across institutions. Panelists discussed policies to balance teaching and research responsibilities, the importance of collaborative ecosystems, and the role of practitioners in research. They emphasized the need for capacity building, peer collaboration, and the development of research cultures within universities.
The Kolab Awards ceremony not only honored individual achievements but also underscored the collective commitment to advancing research in Cambodia.
