Canada-ASEAN Scholarships and Educational Exchanges for Development (SEED)

Studying abroad had always been a dream for Monyroath, and in 2024, that dream came true when she was selected as an exchange student to Centennial College in Toronto under the prestigious Canada-ASEAN Scholarships and Educational Exchanges for Development (SEED) program, funded by the Government of Canada.

Navigating the Path to Opportunity

The application process was both exciting and challenging. First, Monyroath had to prepare all the necessary documents to apply to Centennial College through Paragon International University. At the same time, she applied for the SEED scholarship, which required a strong academic record, a clear study plan, and a motivation letter showing her commitment to development in Cambodia and ASEAN. There were moments when she felt overwhelmed, waiting for emails, but each step taught her patience and the importance of asking for support when needed.

Embracing New Horizons: Growth in Toronto

Arriving in Canada marked a new chapter filled with excitement, learning, and discovery. At Centennial College, Monyroath experienced a different learning environment focused on critical thinking, independent study, and group work. It took time to adapt to the academic expectations and fast-paced teaching style, but she gradually found her rhythm. Outside of academics, living in a new country came with its own set of challenges. From dealing with homesickness and cold weather to navigating a multicultural society, Monyroath experienced culture shock, including differences in communication styles and social norms. However, those challenges helped her grow more independent and confident.

Global Connections and Cambodian Pride

Despite the challenges, the exchange study became one of the most rewarding experiences of Monyroath’s life. She made friends from all over the world, including Mexico, Europe, and other parts of Asia. Together, they shared stories, exchanged cultures, and supported each other. Monyroath also took every chance to share Cambodian culture, introducing friends to Khmer food, Cambodian history, and teaching them simple Khmer phrases. It made her proud to represent Cambodia abroad. Through the exchange, Monyroath became more independent and developed a global mindset. She also learned how to live with people from different backgrounds, manage time better, and adapt to new situations.

Monyroath’s Call to Aspiring Scholars

To everyone who dreams of studying abroad, Monyroath offers this advice: Believe in yourself and don’t be afraid to apply. It may seem hard at first, but it’s worth every effort. She encourages all students to explore opportunities for exchange study because you never know how much you can grow until you take that first step. Prepare your documents early, be honest in your applications, and seek guidance when needed. Once abroad, stay open-minded, step out of your comfort zone, and make the most of the experience. Studying in Canada has opened many doors for Monyroath and created unforgettable memories. She is truly grateful for the SEED scholarship and the opportunity to represent Cambodia internationally.
